Day Two

March 12, 2015 By gcbgordon Leave a Comment

Huckaby Trail

My first day of shooting I had some minor issues with my exposure settings on my camera getting accidentally set to negative numbers. It happened a couple time on my second day of shooting but since I was looking for it, I almost always caught it right away.

However, on my second day I noticed my camera was shooting at a higher ISO (12800) for most of my shots. I am guessing the ISO was higher because I was sitting in a covered ATV while taking my shots.

All my shots today are from the Sedona area. I only had time for a few shots but I enjoyed the ones I got. It seems more enjoyable learning photography when your surrounded by beautiful scenery.

Snow Covered Canyon

Snow Covered Canyon

Canyon looks tranquil covered in snow.

I must have bumped my exposure setting on my camera as it was exposed at -3.33. Thankfully, I was shooting in raw and was able to fix the exposure in editing.

First Day

Grand Canyon South Rim
I recently received the Panasonic Lumix G Camera. Before owning this I only used point and shoot cameras.

Since receiving the camera I have been stuck indoors with below freezing weather. I have been reading the manual and playing around with the settings and was getting anxious to try the camera. Fortunately I had an upcoming trip to Arizona that would allow me a half-a-day to go to the South Rim of the Grand Canyon.

At the canyon I was with a large group riding the Shuttle bus service on Hermit Road. I only had a few minutes to compose my shots before our group moved to the next area. Because of the time constraints for my first journey, I concentrated mainly on composing my shots in program mode. For my next journey, I hope to play around with aperture and work on depth of field.

It was a great first outing and the Grand Canyon is an amazing subject to shoot. I only wished I had more time. I also learned that on my camera my hands keep bumping the exposure button as I had a dozen or so shots where the exposure was set to a negative number. Thankfully, I decided to shoot in raw (my first time shooting in raw) so it was easy to fix the exposure in post editing. If you have not shot in raw I highly recommend it. It does make the file sizes much larger but it is worth it for the extra flexibility in non-destructive post editing options.

This is my journey of learning photography and sharing what I learn along the way.

Prior to this I strictly used the auto setting on my point and shoot camera.
